THINGS TO DO: Relax & Read:

by Ashley Brosnahan

Sometimes there is nothing more relaxing than placing yourself on the beach under an umbrella with a good book while also enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean.

The South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach might be the answer for you. They sell used books but a temporary library card can be had with ID, completion of an application and payment of a small fee. This is a great option if you will be in the area for a week or longer. The library is located at 43 Kent Avenue in Bethany Beach.

The Bethany Story

by Ashley Brosnahan

The following is reprinted with the permission of the Bethany Beach Landowners' Association.

The founding of this little town by the sea is an often ignored accomplishment of members of the Christian Church, also known as the Disciples of Christ, of the Washington, D.C. area and Pennsylvania.  They settled here in an era when the popular summer camp meetings sometimes led to permanent towns with religious names along the Atlantic.  A nationwide competition led to the naming of Bethany and the winner, H. L. Atkinson, of the University of Chicago, received an ocean-front lot as his prize.

Today Bethany may not be exactly as its founders dreamed in 1901 as they sought a gathering place on the Atlantic:  "A suitable tract of land for a permanent yearly seaside assembly for the Christian Churches of this country."

Yet in many ways Bethany reflects the character stamped on it by those early settlers, who in the words of a founding father, Dr. F. D. Power, Washington minister, were looking for "a haven of rest for quiet people," presenting a "safe and rational way of spending the heated term."

Today sea and sand lovers of many persuasions are still searching for serenity and solace and rationality for that "heated term."

Architecture of Georgetown - Sussex County Capital Seat

by Ashley Brosnahan

Georgetown was established in 1791 by an act of the Delaware General Assembly removing the Sussex County Seat of government from Lewis on the coast to a more central location. The site of the town was purchased on May 9, 1791, and surveyed into 60 x 120 foot lots, which were sold to defray the cost of the land purchase.

The town was eventually laid out in a circle one half mile in all directions from The Circle and it was governed directly by the legislature until the mid 1800s. The circular boundary was broken in 1986.

Although relatively young for many communities in Sussex County, Georgetown has some of the finest homes and unique architectural styles in Delaware.
